Global trade in perishable cargo set to grow

Despite this global economic downturn, world trade in perishable cargo, which requires refrigeration, is expected to grow by nearly 15% to over 200 million tons by 2015 of which approximately 50 percent of that, more than 100 million tons, will be seaborne. However, apart from container ships, the specialized reefer carrier fleets, main seaborne vessels to carry refrigerated food stuffs, are expected to shrink from 35.5 million tons in 2007 to 32.0 million tons in 2015.

World growing consumption of seafood

As a safe and healthy diet, the world consumption of seafood has been on a significant rise, and this trend is expected to continue. While there is a necessity to meet this growing demand for marine products in the world, calls for controlling the amount of sea life caught by fishing vessels, so as not to eventually destroy our marine resources, have been increasing as well.
